Classes

ICS Half Day Thursdays

The students will get to try their hand at a little bit of everything during our Fine Arts half day classes. We’ll learn about famous artists and use their work as inspiration for our projects.

Students will get the chance to try out an array of art mediums and techniques.  We will learn about different forms of printmaking relief, mono and screen printing. The children will be working with clay, both hand build and on the pottery wheel. We will then practice drawing techniques with self portraits and characters. We will focus on composition, layout, perspective, line, and shading.

We will even combine some of the art mediums to create unique mixed media projects. This is a great chance for your child to try out new art processes, while learning about the history of fine art. This class is designed for students in K-4th grade, we tailor our art projects to fit the students age and abilities.

AFTER SCHOOL | ceramics & pottery wheel

In our after school ceramics class we will learn about classic hand-building techniques like pinching, coiling, and slab construction that form the foundations of all hand-built pottery. Students will produce several realistic, functional and abstract projects, such as cups, bowls and figures. In addition to building each project by hand, students will get the chance to use our pottery wheels. They will explore the various ways artists manipulate clay using the pottery wheel to make functional items. We will learn all the techniques involved with throwing on real wheels, beginning with wedging, centering and molding different types of clay into symmetrical forms. Through repeated practice, they'll learn to shape the clay as the wheel spins, gaining a feel for the proper thickness.

After the pottery air dries, the students will learn how to trim their pieces using various clay tools, which will give their projects a polished look. We'll incorporate hand-building techniques to add handles and lids and apply different textures before the finished work is fired in our kiln. We'll also explore a variety of glazing techniques such as painting, dipping, staining and more!

Class Information

** Class Cancellation Policy **

We do not offer make up classes if school is canceled due to weather.

**We do not offer a make up class or refund if the student is not able to make it to class**

Parents will be notified VIA email in advance if a class must be canceled. We follow the NYC PS cancellations, in case of a snow day. However, we may still run after school depending on the weather.

All pick up will be canceled on a snow day. If the weather clears we may decide to hold our after school classes. We will email parents regarding our decision by 1 pm that day.

** Late pick up policy **

We understand that living in NYC there may be times when you are late picking up your child, due to traffic, subway delays etc. We try our best to accommodate city life. However we have to account for our teachers time as well. We allow 2 late pick ups during a class session within a 15 min time frame. There will be a $20 late charge applied to late pick ups thereafter, unless prior arrangements are made with the studio.
